Galactic Archeology: Search for the Oldest Stars

Galactic archeology is a study of uncovering the history of the early universe through stellar fossil records, a star’s chemical content and space motion. At the April 21, 2016, meeting of Michiana Astronomical Society Inc. (MAS), Dr. Jinmi Yoon will briefly present the current understanding of formation and evolution of our universe and talk about how we search for the oldest stars in our galaxy. She will also convey the possible environments in which the first stars were born based on the study of those ancient stars.

MAS meets at 7:00 p.m. at the Centre Twp. Branch Library at the intersection of Kern Rd. and Miami St. (map). Dr. Yoon's talk, which will be about 45 minutes, and the general club meeting are free and open to the public.

Yoon did her B.Sc. and M.S. studies in Physics in Korea, then came to the U.S. for her Ph D. studies where she focused on rapidly rotating stars such as Vega using stellar interferometry and high-resolution spectroscopy. She is currently a postdoctoral research associate studying Galactic Archeology with Professor Timothy C. Beers at University of Notre Dame.
