Sungazing Eye Safety

The solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, is an opportunity to embrace the predictive nature of science, but eye safety is paramount. At my Eclipse 2017 page I've listed some relevant links to help you get out and witness the eclipse.

When any portion of the sun is visible--partial eclipse, Baily's Beads, Diamond Ring effect--you may look only with proper eye protection. However, when the the sun is completely obscured by the moon for observers near the eclipse centerline, yes, you can look safely at the sight with your naked eye.

Prioritize your eye safety responsibility. Let us not be a nation of weenies that cower indoors or eschew looking at totality, as has been reported during past solar eclipses. Rather, be a nation of informed and prepared citizens who appreciate and seek out nature's grandest spectacles.
